Golden Underdogs
There’s not any large’dog calling out in UFC 218 to me. However, there’s 1 person with this card who could defy some relatively steep odds.
Francis Ngannou (-270) vs. Alistair Overeem (+230)
Alistair Overeem may get merked by a bigger and more powerful puncher at Francis Ngannou, however at +230, he’s worth throwing a few pennies in the slightest. Normally I would put this struggle in the stay-away class, but this is a significant test for Ngannou, a guy who hasn’t been tested yet.
Overeem is a veteran of the sport and, although his chin might be suspect, he has among the greatest fight IQs from the heavyweight division. Technical kickboxing capability and his smarts could give a large upset to us together with a profit. Don’t go crazy with this, though. Ngannou deserves to be favored. Overeem is well worth a little wager.
Felice Herrig (-140) vs. Cortney Casey (+110)
Cortney Casey is not a huge dog, but her +105 moneyline would still net you a good yield or promote a parlay. Both fighters have appeared strong, but stylistically, Casey appears to have the size and strength to provide Herrig issues. The single woman that has been in a position to fit Casey’s physicality was Claudia Gadelha and that woman is among the best in the branch. If Casey can pour on the pressure, she can overwhelm Herrig and get a tiny upset win here. Again, don’t go crazy and throw down your entire bankroll, but Casey is well worth a couple of shekels.
